Darren is the Associate Head for Academic Support & Finance at the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford. In this role he is responsible for all business management functions and all non-academic staff in the Department, including major activities and units in Oxford, Kenya, Vietnam, Thailand and China.  He is a graduate of Oxford Brookes University, and holds a Master's Degree in Business from the Said Business School, University of Oxford. He has worked for Oxford University for over 25 years, and is a published author.  ‘Fellowship’, a collection of medical research inspired poetry, was published by Chinese University Press in 2016.  

He heads NDM Strategic, a group within the department focused on providing specialised support for complex projects, large strategic initiatives and department operations.  The external portfolio of research grants totals £600m with an annual budget of £160m.  There are 1,000 research and support staff based in Oxford, and employment provided for 2,000 overseas.

He is also a Director of three university subsidiary companies; Instruct Academic Services Ltd, which coordinates access to structural biology infrastructure across Europe, Oxford University (Beijing) Science & Technology Co Ltd (OUBST), which facilitates academic clinical trials in China, and the African Research Collaboration for Health Ltd (ARCH), which is a new vehicle to support a long established major overseas programme in Kenya funded by the Wellcome Trust.   

Darren serves on the Governance committees of the KEMRI-Wellcome Major Overseas Programme in Kenya, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) & Oxford University Centre for Translational Immunology (CTI), and also the CAMS Oxford Institute (COI), of which he is also the Director of Finance & Strategy.  He is also one of the founders and continuous supporter of the Chinese University of Hong Kong / Oxford University Centre for Disaster & Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC).   He is currently supporting further collaborative research growth in China, and consolidating a network of research laboratories in Mexico to support vaccine research.
