A new research project, funded by the John Fell Fund, will investigate how immunotherapy reshapes the immune system in breast cancer patients. Led by Dr. Mariana Pereira Pinho.

The study will explore how the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab changes immune cells in the blood, with the aim of uncovering how these changes contribute to successful anti-cancer responses.

The study will use advanced immune profiling and single-cell sequencing technologies to examine blood samples collected from breast cancer patients throughout pembrolizumab treatment. These analyses will identify changes across different immune cell populations, providing new insight into how immunotherapy works throughout the body.

"We know that pembrolizumab can be remarkably effective for some patients, but we still do not fully understand how it works," said Dr. Mariana Pereira Pinho. "This project will help us build a more complete picture of how the immune system responds to treatment, providing the foundation for future research aimed at improving immunotherapy and developing better ways to monitor patient responses."
